Their Story - Christine Barton (June 2002)

As the light fades oyster catchers swoop low over the River Dee calling with their distinctive note. An occasional splash marks the leap of a wild salmon on its journey upriver. Across the water Crathie Golf Club merges into Balmoral Estate with the tree clad slopes of Lochnagar rising protectively into the dusk. Look in the other direction and the roof line and small spire of Crathie Church emerge from the trees. If your perfect holiday is peace and quiet in a superb location with excellent scenery and good food then Crathie provides it all.

If like me you also want good wheelchair access, a ceiling tracking hoist and adjustable bed and a bathroom with level access shower, a shower chair and even a wash basin that can rise or fall with remote control, Crathie Opportunity Holidays is made to measure. Situated in the Manse Courtyard of Crathie Church the local community can be justifiably proud of what they have achieved. When Minister Bob Sloan moved into the manse with wife Christine she felt privileged to be able to live in such a superb location. She wanted to share her good fortune with people who find holiday accommodation is impossible for them. She was the driving force behind the conversion of the derelict stables into what is now a delightful small holiday development.

The Cottages
The River Dee

There are four cottages grouped around a courtyard with a spacious and comfortable garden room and a separate laundry room with freezer. The conversion has been carried out to the highest standards with attention to detail and decoration that is tasteful and relaxing. The level of equipment is excellent and despite being small with thick walls, there is a feeling of space and light. Information about the local area with detail about access of each location is available to guide your visit. Everyone who works there and indeed the entire community of Crathie are friendly and helpful. They really want you to have a good time.

The Balmoral Estate is a delight with paved walks and gentle slopes. Ballater, the nearest small country town, has good food in accessible restaurants and the people go out of their way to welcome you. A cycle track even makes the wilderness of the Loch a visit for me. 'Whisky and Castle' country, relaxing with friends and family is right for me. I will go back because as Queen Victoria said,

"All seemed to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils."
