Welcome to our New Blog

Happy New Year! To welcome in the new decade we plan to create a monthly blog  which will share ideas and information about all aspects of an accessible holiday on Royal Deeside in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.  Each month we will focus on different features such as our cottages, facilities, equipment, people,  the local area… and anything else that comes to mind, or our readers suggest.

The spotlight this month is on one of our founders Christine Sloan MBE.

Christine Sloan

“In 1996 my husband became the new Minister for the  Parish of Braemar and Crathie in Deeside and we settled into a very large rambling Manse.  That summer was really hot and with our many visitors  we chose the banks of the River Dee for picnics.  The old Stable Courtyard  beside us lay derelict and neglected  and realising how very privileged we were to have come to live in this stunning place I became convinced that we were in a position to share it with others.  The vision became a reality after 5 challenging years…..but oh so worth it.”

The vision Christine talks about is of a holiday facility which would provide accommodation designed for disabled people so that they could enjoy a holiday along with their friends and family.  With tremendous support from the local community after 5 years of fundraising and planning The Manse Courtyard welcomed its first guests. The pleasure and excitement of  The Scottish Disabled Ramblers who arrived in May 2002 made it all worthwhile.

Since then the refurbished Manse Courtyard has welcomed over 900 people with disabilities, along with their friends and families, to enjoy holiday breaks in the accommodation.  Christine’s vision of high quality, comfortable cottages with a friendly and welcoming service provided by staff and volunteers is still uppermost today.

New for 2020

We are now in our busy period getting ready for a new season of welcoming guests.  This year we are modernising the kitchens in Girnock, Gelder and Gairn, after the success of Clunie’s renovation last year.  We are also replacing the height-adjustable wash-basins in the bathrooms with the latest model.  Watch this space for updates and pics.
